The Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo was held this past weekend on Saturday, May 13th in Columbus, Ohio. This was my first time attending and boy was it a lot of fun. The number of exhibitors was large with well over 140 tables. This convention specializes in small press and self published comics showcasing a huge variety of books that cover the full range of genres. My favorite types of small press comics tend to be the autobiographical slice of life type stories.

I had the pleasure of meeting one of my favorite comic creators, Rob Ullman. He is best known for his graphic novel GRAND GESTURES and his 1990's comic series FROM THE CURVE. I have chatted with him for the last year and a half on the Lurid message board over at www.lurid.com and he was very gracious spending a good amount of time talking about the show, his work and the guys at Lurid. I picked up his latest mini-comic THAT'S JUST SUPER which is wonderfully drawn, short, sweet and absolutely charming.

I also met Jeffrey Manley the creator of his autobiographical daily strip MANLY DAYS which is available free online and his other graphic novel JOPLIN WYOMING. I enjoyed both a good deal. Joplin Wyoming was a bit anticlimactic but it is meant to be continued in later volumes. Jeff seems like a great guy and I enjoy his work quite a bit.

I picked up SCAR TISSUE from David Wachter who is the artist behind the book and am looking forward to reading it. I also picked up THE KING by Rich Koslowski and TRICKED by Alex Robinson both of which are available through Top Shelf Productions. Alex Robinson was at the Top Shelf booth and was kind enough to autograph or copy with a quick sketch on the inside cover. It looks like a great read and I am looking forward to it. I am halfway through THE KING and am really enjoying that book and definitely recommend it. The production value of the Top Shelf Productions books is tremendously high and I really recommend their books.

I had a terrific time and cannot wait to go back in 2007. All comic fans who have means of going should definitely make the effort to support these small press creators who put their heart and soul into these books.

Free Comic Book Day 2006

Well this years Free Comic Book Day has come and gone and from the looks of it, it was the most successful to date. I arrived at York Comics and Cards around 1 O'Clock in the afternoon and the store was as full as I have seen it! Marc Sumerak was set up at a table close to the front of the store and was selling comics he had written for $1 as part of a store special and siging them as well. There was a huge table full of free comics from every publisher imaginable. The store was offering some terrific deals with 50% off of their huge selection of back issues as well as 30% off of their large trade paperback collection as well. I somehow managed to spend responsibly and have to say this was the best FCBD yet!

PLANETARY BRIGADE is a comic published by BOOM Studios that is written by Giffen and DeMatteis, the geniuses that brought us JUSTICE LEAGUE from DC Comics and more recently DEFENDERS from Marvel. As a die hard Justice League fan this book does not disapoint. It is a two part story with colorful characters who are masterfully dialogued to keep me "BWA-HAHAing" throughout. This is Giffen and DeMatteis at their very finest. I cannot recommend this book enough. PLANETARY BRIGADE is worth every penny and jam packed with story and content. Now back to your regularly scheduled Star Trek fanboy programing.

Anthony Montgomery at Vulkon Cleveland 2006

My wife and I had the best time yet at a Vulkon show last weekend. The first autograph we got on Saturday was from Anthony Montgomery who was kind enough to pose for a picture and chat a bit. His luggage got lost in Colorodo so someone was kind enough to give him a Cleveland Cavaliers T-shirt to wear. I found out he is a Bulls and Pacers fan but does like LeBron James. My wife commented on how much he smiled as on Enterprise his character was much more serious. He was extremely friendly and gracious and seemed to really enjoy himself at the convention.

Cinema Wasteland April fools weekend 2006!

Cinema Wasteland had a another great line up of guests this spring for their Strongsville OH horror Con at the Holiday Inn. There was a huge dealer room and the always interesting EVIL DEAD museum hosted by effects guru Tom Sullivan. This time around the convention featured the victims from THE DEVILS REJECTS and there were people lined up for an autograph from Priscilla Barnes of 3's COMPANY fame. The highlight of the show was hanging out again with Wayne Alan Harold, cult film director of KILLER NERD, BRIDE OF KILLER NERD, GIRLFRIENDS and TOWNIES. I had a great time chatting about the Lurid crew and his numorous projects that should be reaching completion this year. Of particular interest is the NERD IN A NUTSHELL documentary who's subject, Toby Radloff of Cleveland OH, was a Saturday convention guest. Toby was doing some charity work on Sunday so I was unable to get his signature on my copy of TOWNIES, but I heard he is planning on being back for Cinema Wasteland in the Fall so I will be sure to make it again!

The story is engrossing and the baddies are downright terrifying! The slow lumbering zombies have been replaced with infected people who run to attack you and will dodge you shots. This may be the greatest game I have ever played. Enjoy the motorboat scene!

Happy new year and thank God the holidays are over! After a long season of shopping and family gatherings it is great to finally have a chance to relax. This past weekend on a trip to Southpark Mall to grab a bite to eat I noticed a huge group of people there for a sports memorabelia show. A bunch of the Ohio State football players were there signing autographs. Guess who else was there? Thats right, the WWF (sorry E) pro wrestler Virgil was there signing as well. That was a blast from the past! Countless Saturday mornings watching Wrestling Challenge and Virgil along side "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiasi bringing the pain. Johnboy just happened to be there and I heard he got Virgil's John Hancock. Maybe if we are all really nice to him he'll let us peak at it if he posts it to his blog.

Sid Haig was another guest at the Cinema Wasteland show this weekend. He was having a good time with all the fans and couldn't have been nicer. Here I am giving my best devils horns while Sid and Brett gave the show two thumbs up. Thank God he wasn't in Captain Spaulding make up or I would have shit the bed! Clowns scare the hell out of me! Sid will be back for another show in the Cleveland area this November. See you there Sid!

Checked out the Cinema Wasteland show in Strongsville today. Talk about a good shit! They had the whole DAWN OF THE DEAD staring cast along with many of the featured zombies! I was especially pleased to meet Ken Foree who played Peter in the film. It was nice to meet a cult movie star as down to Earth as he was. He really seemed to be enjoying the show and gettign to see his costars again. More from Cinema Wasteland coming soon!

Beer of the Week: Samuel Adams Black Lager

This dark lager pours a rich brown that is not quite opaque. I was suprised at how well this beer held its head and also had some nice lacing throughout. I found it similar to many porters that I have tried with a rich malt flavor balanced with a hint of bitterness. The aroma of this beer is also quite nice foreshadowing the taste of the beer. The beer has a pleasant aftertaste that sits on the back of the tongue. A very nice beer that I rate 7.5 out of 10.

Saying a few prayers, walking a few miles, then eating like a pig!

Every year we head down to Little Italy in Cleveland, Ohio to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption with a ton of family. We begin by getting there early to light a few candles and say a few prayers at Holy Rosary Church which also happens to be where my wife and I were married. The street is filled with thousands of people who are enjoying the huge selection of Italian foods served at vendors along the sides of Mayfield Road. Finally the procession begins where we all walk in prayer around the streets of Little Italy. This year the weather was great but I did manage to get a bit too much sun on my face. Following this hour and a half march we grab some of our favorite food selections (Italian Sausage wrapped in pizza, fried mozzerella, elephant ears, Italian Ice) and head to my wifes cousins house which is conveniently located next to the Church parking lot. Boy did it feel good to sit down and stuff my face. This year the mayor of Cleveland, Jane Campbell was in attendance as well as Bishop Anthony Pilla. My legs are sore as hell but it was well worth it. I am looking forward to that extra meatball sandwhich I brought home for dinner!

Block Party 2005

Well this years blockparty was a lot of fun. There was a ton of food and drink to be had with burgers, dogs, sausages, and chicken on the grill. Everyone in attendance won a prize in a raffle that was held after everyone had stuffed their face! We won what was called a "booby prize" which turned out to be a really nice cooler with a tap on the bottom. The weather was good long enough for the grilling to get done and then there was some mild drizzle after dinner but the tents kept everyone dry. We are looking forward to block party 2006!

This was my lunch one day this past week. Mr's T's potato and cheddar frozen pierogi's are great. I boil them in water then saute them in a little olive oil and season them with some salt, pepper, garlic powder and a little Molly McButter for that imitation butter flavor that we all love so much! They make a great dinner with some polish sausage and an cold beer. I always make extra so the leftovers can come with me it work the next day. I keep paper plates and plastic silverware in my desk at work so I am ready to eat at a moments notice. Get Polish and fry some of these up!

Beer of the Week: McEwan's India Pale Ale

This IPA pours well from the bottle and has a nice amber brown color to it and there is not much head to speak of. It has a malty aroma with a hint of bitterness. McE wan's does not taste much like an IPA as the hops are very subtle and the malt flavor is quite strong and there are also nutty flavors throughout. It lacks carbonation to a degree but I wouldn't call it a flat beer. All in all McEwan's is quite drinkable with a pleasant flavor reminiscent of some nutbrown ales I have had. It was not what I expected at all. Nothing extraordinary here, I would score it 6 of 10.

It doesn' get any better than this. Great Lakes Brewing Company is hands down the best brewery I have ever been to and it is great having it here in my home town! They brew a really nice variety of suds all year round and their speacial seasonal choices are just as impressive. It is hard to believe we are just a few months away from Christmas Ale with its high alcohol content and spicy flavors, it is a perfect choice for a cold winter day. Lets all crack a cold one, shall we?

We has a great time this past Saturday evening at the Browns scrimmage but now I need a second job. $5 bucks a ticket, great. 2 beers and a Sugardale hot dog $17.50! It was just Budweiser! We got tickets to an upcoming game later this month so I better not spend a dime until then. The weather was great and there was a decent fireworks show following the festivities at Cleveland Browns Stadium. When we got back to my car, which was parked on the West side of the stadium in the Port Authority parking lot, it was covered in ash and fireworks debris. There were also several HUGE leavings from the seagulls (photo is for reference only, this is not my actual car).

At 7PM at the Shaker Town Square Theater Bruce Campbell gave us a nice twenty minute talk and another Q&A session before we got the sneak peak at his new Sci-FI channel movie. The film was a lot a fun and featured great performance by Bruce, Ted Raimi and Stacey Keach. It airs on television in September and will be on DVD with special features in October.

OK, we all like to make fun of people who dress up for conventions. I do, however have to give credit to the approximately 9 members of The 501st Legion Ohio Garrison who were at TWISTED NIGHTMARE WEEKEND. They were extremely gracious in not turning down a single photo op with convention goers. They also have a documentary on their organization showing some of the charity work they do, like visiting sick kids in the hospital. This is all well and good but why not Star Trek? That would be way cooler. Like Vader could ever get with a hot green chick?

I enjoyed a special viewing of his new NERD IN A NUTSHELL documentary which will be out in November on DVD. From the looks of this picture he didn't like my hand on his ass a heck of a lot! Can you believe this guy hasn't seen EVIL DEAD?!? It was great to meet Wayne and hopefully there is some beer in both of our futures! Did I mention he's a 3 time cancer survivor? I went to the TWISTED NIGHTMARE WEEKEND in Middleburg Heights today. It is a horror and cult movie convention and was a complete blast. There were a ton of People in STAR WARS costumes so I had to take advantage and snap a few pictures.

Bigscreen televisions rank up there with beer, pizza and lighting farts on fire. No one should watch Sci-Fi Friday with anything less than 40 inches because size really does matter. What you do with it also matters. For example, moving the bigscreen into the garage to have a football tailgait party that includes a driveway cookout. Here is a friendly warning: a screen this large amplifies excrutiating pain that occurs when the Lifetime Channel is on. Lifetime is television for women who want to cry and for men who want to be women.

The great about comic books is that they are fun to read and they usually don't give you papercuts. They fit neatly in these long boxes and you can alphabetize the and order them by issue number. After 20 years or so they take up an entire room of your house and cause your spouse to become upset with all the room they take up (which is less room than shoes and purses require). Unfortunately comic books are for kids and shoes and purses are for adults so be ready to move all of your comics to an area that will make it difficult to alphabetize and organize by issue number. Start collecting right now and in 20 years you will know exactly what I mean, and that is wives are wonderful.

Time Travel and the Bathroom

Here is the view from the second floor window of my office where I can gaze out at the world and try to mentally move the clock hands so that the little one is on 4 and the big one is on 12. It usually doesn't work so I just go back to my desk and start putting some peanut butter on Triscuit crackers. Its high in protien as well as fiber which usually earns me a trip to the office bathroom. This pond is like the office bathroom for the 4, 562,391 Canadian Geese that do nothing but hiss at people outside the office and poop everywhere (which is why the pond is green). Damn it, we're out of T.P.

After this afternoons Pizza Hut festivities, on the way back to the office (or on the way to drop some kids off at the pool) I spotted this vehicle. Chris, I think this is the 2005 Pepsi truck you've had your eye on for awhile! Notice the built in lift on the back of the truck. And to think P Diddy ripped of your Pepsi truck idea. If I see him I will be sure to kick him in the nuts for you.

Weekly Lunch at "The Hut"

Here is the view from John's car of the Pizza Hut sign (name the make of car and win an "attaboy!" outta petty cash). Once a week we have been heading to this fine dining establishment to enjoy the "all you can eat" lunch buffet. It can also make you "sick for a day" if you make five trips back to repeatedly fill your plate with all the meats pizza which I will refer to as "a good idea at the time." Well for 4.99 I no longer require another meal today but the lingering nausea was a high price to pay for my "good idea at the time." I would like to give "a shout out" as the youngsters seem to enjoy doing to Chris for joining us at lunch today.

Yep, thats right. I'm crabby. I gotta load in my pants. What is it? Well the latest story line that ran through the three Superman monthly comics and concluded in Wonder Woman was one of the most dissapointing stories in awhile. They had me for the first three issues where Superman is portrayed as being the victim of mind control and is using his powers on the good guys. Then they plant the idea that the Justice League of America are the ones under mind control. In the finale we realize Maxwell Lord is behind it all and he has Superman trying to take out Wonder Woman. This has to be the worst and most unbelievable storyline in a long time. Maxwell Lord suddenly thinks that those with superpowers must be taken out before they wind up eradicating humanity because he believes it is an inevitability. This is the same Maxwell Lord who assembled the Justice League? And was friends with Superman and other members of the Justice League, including Wonder Woman who was a member. How the hell does he completely turn in to a murdering bastard after being a proponant of the worlds greatest superhero team. What complete crap. Another big event story that sucks. Is this story enjoyable if you are completely unaware of Max's history? I certainly wasn't knowing his background. Thanks DC, for continuing to screw over my favorite incarnation of the League. Way to go.

Kellen Winslow is a big idiot who won't be playing in 2005

Kellen's vroom vroom injury is serious. It has been reported that Winslow has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will require surgery although he is going to seek a second opinion. Needless to say the Browns will be without the tight end for the upcoming 2005 season. That is just great. A $40 million dollar contract and the first two seasons we will see little from our "franchise player." I guess what Chris Rose said is ringing true again: " The Cleveland sports fan is 90% scar tissue." Click the title for the espn article.

What a piece of crap! Figures that my favorite show on TV would get canceled and then the send-off would be a big steaming pile. They should have let the series end with the previous episode "Terra Prime" and have flushed this one down the toilet. It was a Star Trek The Next Generation episode, and a bad one at that! Hopefully Trek's best writer and producer, Many Coto will get a new Star Trek on the air sooner rather than later. Check out Many's new new website at http://www.mannycoto.com. DC Comics gets a new Logo

After about 30 years DC Comics is getting a new Logo. It's this type of thing that makes me feel like a cantankerous old man at 30 years of age. Of all the stupid things to get irritated about I choose this. Don't get me wrong, the new logo is pretty darn spiffy; but the ole' DC bullet was something that has been there since I was a lad and now it is riding off into the sunset. If I had that kind of money I would be sitting on my new couch watching my new enormous television playing every fricking video game ever made on every console in existence. For those who don't know, Kellen Winslow is a Tight End for the Cleveland Browns who has a contract that says "Don't ride a motorcycle you idiot or we can take back millions of dollars that we paid you in bonuses." Kellen couldn't resist riding the shiny vroom vroom that some reports say he doesn't even have a liscence to ride and thus endangering a mind boggling amount of money. Hey Kellen, go buy some shoes, put the shoes on and put your dough in the box and bury it in the back yard. Now go inside and watch some Sci-Fi channel for 12 years. Now when you retire you will still have some money in that Hush Puppies box out back because you you didn't violate your contract. The End.
